Nakee Butter

Based in Hamtramck, Nakee Butter is way more than your average peanut butter — it’s also full of omega fatty acids, plus pea protein, brown rice protein, fair-trade cacao and agave nectar. In fact, just one pouch contains 20% of your recommended daily protein. To amp up the flavor even more, pair Nakee Butter with fruit, oatmeal or toast (but it’s also delicious eaten straight from the pouch).

Ruby’s Natural Hair Care

Created in 2017 by cosmetologist LaShonda Sims and based in Detroit, Ruby’s is a homemade, sulfate-free, essential oil-infused natural hair care line for all hair types and textures. The company is truly a family affair: Sims works with her daughter, Amber Nicole, and two cousins to create their unisex products, which include oils, body butters, hair mud, shampoos, conditioners, soaps and more. Plus, the company is named after Sims’ late grandmother, whose nickname was Ruby.

Northern Nail Polish

In 2013, Traverse City resident KC Springberg started making her own nail polish so that she could paint her nails without risking exposure to any toxins. Now, she has a full line of vegan, cruelty-free polishes that are free of 10 major toxins. There’s a cute factor, too: Many polishes have Michigan-themed names like “Get Your Mitten On” and “Escape to the Cabin” — and Springberg even makes custom colors. Nail Polish also sells glass files, cuticle butter and polish remover.

Shā La Cynt’s

When Cynthia Davis decided to adopt a healthier lifestyle to meet her husband’s health needs, she began making popcorn, which she’d send to school for her kids. When their teachers began raving about her homemade snacks, Cynthia decided to begin selling the popcorn at local farmers markets. Today, Shā La Cynt’s, which makes all of its products in Detroit, offers a wide range of locally sourced, vegan, non-GMO popcorn, which comes in flavors like Sriracha Ranch, Chocolate Caramel Crunch, Smokin’ Chili Cheese and more. (The brand, which also makes vegan cakes, is available at select Detroit-area Whole Foods, plus Eastern Market.)
